How Likely Is It That Your Job Will Disappear?

A decade from now, your job as you know it may no longer exist. That’s the first line in chapter one of my book, Startups & The Tech Revolution, and while there’s a certain shock value to it, the sentiment becomes truer with each passing year as individuals and workforces become less prepared to deal with technological disruption.

If you presume that your job is safe from the technological revolution, I’d caution you to think again. The reality is that the tech revolution is already here and being accelerated by entrepreneurial companies driving disruptive change across nearly every industry. Emerging technologies like 3D printing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, genetic editing, nanotechnology, robotics, computer chip speed, quantum computing, blockchain, 5G wireless, human-machine interface, and voice recognition aren’t just changing the way we live our lives. They are altering the world of work in irreversible ways that will fundamentally change myriad jobs, and cause many more to disappear entirely.

Workplaces today face a transition that rivals the upheaval of the Industrial Revolution. Technology is forcing this transition at speeds orders of magnitude faster than what our ancestors faced. The time to act and make plans for the future of your career is now. It’s my hope that this short assessment can help you determine how susceptible your current job is to automation while providing some solutions to help you navigate our present technological age.
